The Poznań department of the Institute of Legal Studies of Polish Academy of Sciences was founded in Poznań in 1973. It consists of two research units - Human Rights Centre and Centre of Family Law and Rights of Child. Human Rights Centre started its activities headed by Professor Adam Łopatka, who was at the same time the Director of the Institute of Legal Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. 

From the very beginning the activities of the Poznań Human Rights Centre were concentrated on the process of adopting  Polish law to the international standards of human rights protection (i.a. active contribution to the process of creating Polish Constitution of 1997). The members of the Human Rights Centre were frequently involved as advisers in the legislative process, they are also regular associates of international organizations, particularly UN, they lecture at many Polish and foreign universities. To the previous staff of the Human Rights Centre belonge inter alia Professor Zdzisław Kędzia, Professor Marek Piechowiak, Professor Lesław Kański, PhD Hanna Suchocka, PhD Anna Woźniak-Tyczka and PhD Renata Hliwa.
